30th Anniversary Benefit and Presentation of the sixth Robert H. Kirschner Award for Global Activism to M. Zaher Sahloul, MD.

6 p.m. - 9 p.m.

The Award

Robert H. Kirschner, MD was an internationally recognized authority on forensic pathology, human rights violations, police brutality, torture and child abuse. Dr. Kirschner's activism took him to more than a dozen foreign countries where torture, extra-judicial executions and mass killings occurred. Dr. Kirschner trained pro bono health providers to conduct forensic evaluations of torture survivors and provided ongoing consultation to Kovler Center staff and volunteers. The recipient of the Robert H. Kirschner Award for Global Activism embodies the spirit of Dr. Kirschner and, like him, has conducted exemplary work to serve the world’s most vulnerable populations and to give a voice to those who have been silenced.

Join us to support Marjorie Kovler Center’s three decades of service, training, and advocacy for torture survivors and congratulate Dr. M. Zaher Sahloul, recipient of the Robert H. Kirschner Award for Global Activism.

M. Zaher Sahloul, MD, has been conducting humanitarian efforts to help the civilian population in his homeland of Syria, especially in devastated Aleppo, where he has led 14 medical missions. He has treated civilians injured by sniper fire and bombs and those with chronic illnesses, sometimes working in basements to reduce the chances of being caught in the bombings. Dr. Sahloul considers his work a chance to redress the world’s inaction to the civil war. His commitment, energy, and compassion are compelling, demonstrated both in his international work and locally, in his work as a pulmonologist and critical care physician in Chicago. Dr. Sahloul, the founder of the American Relief Coalition for Syria and a senior advisor to the Syrian American Medical Society, is an Associate Clinical Professor at the University Of Illinois College Of Medicine. He has written widely about the medical and humanitarian crisis in Syria. Chicago Magazine named him a Chicagoan of the Year 2016, for which he was honored last December 6th at the Four Seasons in Chicago.
